The FIRE PROTECTION TECHNOLOGY program at Wilson Community College is designed to prepare individuals with technical and professional knowledge to make decisions regarding fire protection for both public and private sectors. Course work includes classroom and laboratory exercises to introduce students to the main areas of fire service: prevention, training, operations, and administration. Course work prepares students to earn an associate degree or a certificate. Graduates can find jobs in municipal fire departments, industrial firms, insurance rating organizations, and educational organizations.
Kay Brown
As a wife and mother of a young child, Kay Brown struggled with how to balance a home life and a career. She wanted to continue her education but knew that her family depended on the income from her job at Wilson Memorial Hospital. Her experiences with various jobs at the hospital made her realize that she wanted to be a nurse so she enrolled at Wilson Community College in the associate degree nursing curriculum. Kay felt that the curriculum was challenging but with the support of family and the college she graduated with honors in 1979. While employed as a registered nurse Kay realized she wanted to further her education so she enrolled in a four year college and graduated with a bachelor's degree in nursing. Kay took a job working part-time with the college as a clinical instructor while continuing to work as a registered nurse. Kay felt that the work as an instructor was very rewarding so she took a full-time position with the college and began working on and ultimately completed a master's degree in nursing. Kay feels that she has now come full circle beginning as a student at the college and ending as a nursing faculty member. She feels that she owes Wilson Community College her education and her career.
